Safety at Knauf Insulation

When it comes to safety, silence can be fatal. That is why if we see any risk at work we must always speak up and always welcome safety feedback from colleagues.

This powerful message is the driving force behind Knauf Insulation’s focus on ‘Safety Feedback’ to mark World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

Dominique Bossan, the company’s CEO for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific, and Member of the Knauf Group Management Committee, said: “Working safely at Knauf Insulation requires all of us to work together to create a safe environment and underlines our commitment to care for each other and to demonstrate one of our core Knauf values – Menschlichkeit (Humanity).

“Safety has to be everyone’s responsibility. Everyone needs to know that they are empowered to speak up if there is an issue and everyone has to receive safety feedback as a gift from a colleague who really cares for their safety.”

Mark Thompson, Knauf Insulation’s Health, Safety, Environment, Energy and Quality Systems Director, said: “Sometimes people find it difficult to give safety feedback. They might think the person receiving it will react negatively or find them overly critical. Every day we need to highlight that our safety culture expects us to speak up when we think we can improve the safety of our colleagues or work environment. Nobody should ever be concerned about a negative reaction from giving feedback because it is what we all demand from each other.”

We will all commit to giving and welcoming safety feedback

“’Speak Up, Listen Up’ is one of Knauf Insulation’s safety principles and we can see how critical this principle has been in underpinning the huge development in proactive safety activities,” Mark said.

“We wanted to further build on this by asking everyone at Knauf Insulation to be ready to provide and receive safety feedback — every second of every day. Whether it is their boss, their working partner or someone they see acting dangerously in any situation we want everyone to play their part in creating a safer community.”

Always aiming for zero harm

The theme of today’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work is “a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work”.

“We all have the right to go home safely after work, but it is up to all of us to take responsibility for our own safety by listening and learning and to always speak up for the safety of our colleagues,” said Mark.

Knauf Insulation has been an active participant in World Day for Safety and Health at Work since 2016 and this year more than 4,500 Knauf Insulation colleagues across 21 manufacturing sites in 15 countries in the EMEA and APAC regions have been invited to focus on ‘Safety Feedback’.

The initiative marks another milestone for Knauf Insulation which has committed to strive to achieve zero harm as part of the company’s For A Better World sustainability strategy as well as reducing its Total Recorded Incident Rate* from 9.1 in 2019 to a maximum of 5.0 by the end of 2023.

*TRIR is the industry benchmark that involves dividing the number of injuries at a company by the total number of hours worked by all employees and then multiplying by a million.
